Solving Common Odor Problems in Your Home
Deel
Hi, I'm Claudia — the face behind GeurFris. For years, I've been helping people with odor problems not only make their home (or workplace) smell fresher, but also feel more pleasant. Because scent is so much more than just a nice smell. It is connected to atmosphere, peace, memories... and yes, sometimes also to discomfort.
In this article, I share five odor problems I regularly encounter with clients. Chances are you'll recognize yourself in one or more — and I'm happy to provide practical, simple solutions. No heavy perfumes or sprays, but a fresh approach with care.
1. That elusive smell in the living room
The living room is often the heart of the home, and it's precisely there that many smells come together. From a dog jumping on the couch to yesterday's curry. Sometimes you don't even smell it yourself anymore, but visitors immediately notice it.
What you can do about odor problems:
– Ventilate well daily, even in winter
– Sprinkle some baking soda on your couch or rug occasionally, let it sit for a while, and then vacuum
– And place a fragrance diffuser with a soft scent, such as cotton or lime leaf. Not overpowering, but wonderfully fresh
2. The musty smell in the hallway or corridor
One of the most underestimated odor problems is the hallway. It's often the first place you come home to, but also a place where the air remains stagnant. Think of coats, shoes, moisture... it accumulates.
My tips:
– Leave the front door open occasionally for fresh air
– A dehumidifier or small dehumidifier works wonders
– And a subtle fragrance diffuser at the entrance makes a world of difference — I'm a fan of bergamot or eucalyptus for this
3. Cooking odors that linger
Don't get me wrong: I love cooking. But some smells just linger in the house for too long, especially with open kitchens. Onions, fish, garlic — sound familiar?
What really helps:
– Lid on the pan (easy and effective)
– Leave the extractor hood on after cooking
– And choose a fragrance diffuser with a fresh, neutral scent that doesn't mask cooking odors but truly refreshes — like mint or green tea
4. Pet odors (however much we love them)
I have a dog myself, so I know what it's like. That typical ‘wet dog smell’ after a walk in the woods, or a litter box that's having a bad day. You often only smell it when you come home after being away for a while.
What I always advise:
– Regularly wash your pet's beds, blankets, and toys
– Clean litter boxes thoroughly and often
– And use a fragrance diffuser with a neutral refill, specially suitable for pet areas. This keeps it fresh without startling your dog or cat
5. The lingering smell in the bathroom or toilet
Bathrooms and toilets are small and often humid — which makes them susceptible to odors. Even when everything is clean, the air can still feel a bit ‘stale’.
What can you do about odor problems?
– Leave the fan or window open longer after showering
– Replace towels in time (I know... we all postpone that sometimes)
– It's better not to use spray cans — they only temporarily mask odors. A good fragrance diffuser works quietly and keeps the room subtly fresh
Odor problems are normal — but you don't have to accept them
What I primarily want to say is: odor problems are nothing to be ashamed of. Every house lives, and where there is life, odors arise. But it is nice if you can influence that.
With GeurFris, I try to give fragrance diffusion something gentle, something soothing. No excess, no chemical bomb, but natural scents that support your space.
